I know that the politics of the situation are very complex. With the weakness of the Abbas-led Fatah movement, it is unclear what they bring. Olmert’s leaderhsip, too, does not rest on much. Ordinary Jewish Israelis carry great anxiety toward both the Israeli political class and the Hamas-Hezbullah-Iran forces surrounding them. Compared to most peaceniks, I believe that Israel is in greater peril and I worry more about Arab intransigence. However, AIPAC’s monolithic presence does not create the conditions for reasonable next steps to occur.
