Annual Thinking (pt. 3)

More thoughts on Christian and Jewish calendars when I return. Specifically, I write more about Franz Rosenzweig’s interpretation of the the sculpture above. Here’s the traditional view which FR partially adopts and turns on its head.

Portals to Gothic churches, for example, contrast personified figures of Synagogue and Church. What is contrasted here is not so much Judaism and Christianity as the spirit of the Old Law and the spirit of the New. The figure of Synagogue,with head bowed, typically holds the broken staff of worldly power and lets droop the tables of Mosaic law, while the figure of Church, with head erect, typically holds the triumphal cross and the chalice of grace under the New Law.
