Theology by Doing: Not by Speculation Alone

Here’s what Matt at Religiocity calls the best Luther quotation ever. “I did not learn my theology all at once, but I had to search deeper for it, where my temptations took me. … Not understanding, reading, or speculation, but living—nay, dying and being damned—make a theologian.”

A reader there includes another, “God does not save people who are only fictitious sinners. Be a sinner and sin boldly but believe and rejoice in Christ even more boldly, for he is victorious over sin, death, and the world.”

I don’t know my Luther and am not a theologian. I do like the idea that truth cannot be found through speculation alone.
