Professional Acrophobia

Here’s another way that life seems to get harder the more one learns. I’ll visit an old friend in Philly tomorrow. She’s an OB/GYN resident and has described a recurring dynamic in her medical career. As one ascends in a professional field, constant competition stifles confidence. Will you apply for that fellowship? Will you do research? Who’s going to be chief? Meanwhile, family life, attention to patient care, professional ethics and civic identity remain undernourished.
